Delirious and Sports Delirious et le Sports Of Sound Mind Sure they're Delirious? about their faith and wild about sports —but they have a pretty sane approach. By Wayne Carpenter If we were to compile a list of athletes endorsed by musical instrument companies, or vice versa, a list of rock-n-rollers endorsed by sports equipment companies, the list would be quite short. But if that list did exist and we began to work our way down it, our first nominee would undoubtedly be the British Christian rock band, Delirious? "Never heard of 'em," you say? While that is possible, it is also possible that you've heard—and even sung—their songs. How about "I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever," one of the most widely sung worship songs around? Or maybe "Shout To The North," "Did You Feel The Mountains Tremble," and their most popular Top 20 hit, "Deeper"? So why exactly is a Christian worship band endorsed by Callaway Golf, Oakley Eyewear, and Orca Wetsuits, and why are the members of Delirious? featured in a sports magazine? Well, it doesn't take much finger-pricking to see that sports run through their veins almost as much as music does. Each member of Delirious? grew up in and around sports. Being from England, they are, no doubt, all avid soccer fans. In one music video, filmed live in front of thousands of fans, lead vocalist Martin Smith opened the concert by booting a soccer ball 50 yards into the crowd. Most rock-n-rollers would have opted to smash their guitars instead. Whether it was soccer, cricket, track, golf, triathlon, or skateboarding, sports have helped shape the lives of these boys from Littlehampton, England. At the moment, Stew Smith seems to be the one raising the most eyebrows in the sports world. Stew is an Olympic distance triathlete. He missed qualifying for the 2003 World Championships of Triathlon in New Zealand by a heart-breaking 3 minutes. While most athletes would probably take this missing out by such a narrow margin and use it as drive and focus in their training, neglecting other priorities in life, Stew just shrugs it off as if to say, "God knows what's best for me right now." So, is Stew giving up on his goals to represent his country as a triathlete? Not at all. He just keeps plugging away while serving God with his music. "If I could get down to 2 hours, 5 minutes, I would most certainly qualify for the Great Britain team, which would be a great dream to represent my country in something," he says with a smile. Stew had been in the habit of packing his road cycle with him on the band's trips to the US. Recently, however, he hasn't been able to pack his bike because of the mass of musical stuff the band uses. Stew's response to the problem? "I'm working on getting a bike to keep stored here in the US with some of our music equipment. That way I'll be able to train on the bike during US concert dates." Stew notes his Oakley Eyewear and Orca Wetsuits endorsements with a touch of British humor, saying, "I'm probably the best-dressed athlete out there." But there's more to Stew than looking good on the triathlon course. He is obviously putting some great times on the clock. He's the unusual athlete whose name appears both on the music billboards and on the time boards of the world championships. Martin Smith's story takes us back to his youth and the questions of "What if?" His is a story that someone could examine and then ask why God gives the talent and ability but not the time or opportunity. It's a story that can inspire us to truly trust God, for it shows that God knew what He was doing all along. Growing up, Martin would have been what Americans call "Big Man on Campus" when it came to sports. He captained three varsity teams. Soccer, hockey, and cricket were all sports Martin excelled at. At the age of 15 he was offered a position on his county's cricket team. (The county-level team would be comparable to an all-star team.) Cricket is a sport whose athletes have opportunity to play not just on a national level, but also at an international level—thus giving themselves a world stage upon which to shine. Cricket could be listed as one of the top five most popular sports around the world. So would Martin Smith be a highly sought after and highly paid cricket player? It seemed very possible. But there was one problem: Certain tenets of his strong faith. The county-level cricket matches were often played on Sundays. "I can remember desperately wanting to be a part of the team," he says, "but knowing that regularly missing church for a sports match felt wrong." Today, thousands of Delirious? fans around the world are thankful that God was in control. Seeing how far God has brought him, watching him pour out his heart in song and worship on stage, and simply popping in a Delirious? CD—these are more than enough reasons to inspire Christians to seek God first. The next member of Delirious? is a guy who fits great on stage with his shaved head, sometimes-dyed goatee, and earrings—but to most golfers he would look a bit out of place on the 18th green. It is quite possible, though, that Stu G is more at home on the golf course than the guy teeing up behind him. And how many amateur golfers can boast an endorsement? Stu G explains the relationship as "an ongoing and happy" one. Callaway Golf helps him get tee times at some of the greatest courses in the world—courses he wouldn't be able to play on his own. In return Callaway gets a guy who's out winning big tournaments with Callaway clubs. Well, maybe not. But if you ever catch a certain Callaway Golf promotional video, you'll hear the best music ever played on a golfing products video. To a golf enthusiast, Stu G's travels could be the motive for slight envy. "Touring with the band has given me opportunity to play golf all around the world," he says as his eyebrows raise in a way that says, "Pretty cool, huh?" Drawing up a list of all the places he's played certainly isn't for the impatient … Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, South Africa, Canada, England, Northern Ireland. And what about the good old USA? Let's just say that if he had a magnet for every state he's played in, he'd need another refrigerator. But when it comes to touring and doing concerts, it's not all fun and games. Along with playing golf and training for triathlons come endless hours of waiting in airport terminals, checking and claiming thousands of pounds of baggage, red-eye flights in and out of tour cities, and bus rides that nobody could get used to. One has to wonder how the Delirious? boys have time for the things they consider dearest to them—spending time with God and their families. To spend time with their families they came up with a solution years ago: Always take time off and spend it at home immediately after they've been on the road. And spending time alone with God is something Delirious? has been working at as a band for a decade now. Often they invite mentors to go on the road with them to fulfill a pastoral role for the band. Stu G says that one of the most important ways they stick to the Word of God is by having close fellowship with their hometown church members through small group Bible studies and prayer sessions. It's evident in their music that they deeply desire a real companionship with the Creator, not only during musical worship but also through a lifestyle of worshipping God. Delirious? has been known to travel up to 12 hours, one way, to put on a 45-minute show, only to turn around and travel 12 hours back home. Après un peu de recherche il est clair que le sport est aussi présent dans leur vie que la musique. Chaque membre du groupe se trouvait impliqué dans le sport depuis leur début. Anglais, ils sont évidemment des amateurs de football puisque dans une vidéo musicale filmée dans un stade de foot lors d'une célébration de louange, ils ont envoyé des ballons de foot dans la foule. La plupart des rockers auraient choisi de casser leur guitares à la place. Que cela soit le football, le cricket, l'athlétisme, le skateboard,le golf, le triathlon, le sport a toujours été présent dans le groupe issu de la ville de Littlehampton en Angleterre. Pour l'instant, Stew Smith semble être le plus proche du monde du sport en pratiquant le triathlon olympique. Il a raté sa place dans l'équipe qui participa aux Championnat de Triathlon en Nouvelle Zélande en échouant de 3 minutes. Pour la plupart des athlètes, un tel échec constituerait le seul but à viser dans la vie à l'exclusion de toute autre activité. Mais Stew l'ignore en disant, "Dieu sait ce qui est le plus important pour moi maintenant." Cela voudrait-il dire que Stew abandonne la possibilité de représenter son pays comme athlète? Pas du tout. Il continue son sport tout en servant Dieu via sa musique. "Si j'arrive à faire 2 heures 5 minutes, je pourrai alors me qualifier pour l'équipe britannique ce qui me donnera l'occasion de représenter mon pays" dit-il avec le sourire. Stew prend souvent son vélo de course avec lui lors de ses déplacements avec le groupe aux Etats Unis. Il n'a pas pu prendre son vélo ces derniers mois aux USA vu la quantité de matériel employé par le groupe. La réaction de Stew face au problème fut de dire "Je essaierai de laisser un vélo aux USA en permanence avec du matériel de musique afin de pouvoir l'utiliser lors des concerts futurs". Stew rigole de ses sponsors Oakley Eyewear (lunettes pour le triathlon) et Orca Wetsuits (combinaisons de plongée) avec humour, en disant, "je suis sans doute le mieux habillé des athlètes par ici". Il est donc intéressant de trouver un tel athlète dont le nom figure aussi bien sur les fichiers de résultats des championnats du monde de triathlon en même temps qu'au hit-parade de la musique. Pourquoi Dieu a-t'il donné le talent et le savoir faire sans donner l'opportunité? C'est une histoire qui nous invite à vraiment faire confiance en Dieu car Dieu savait très bien ce qu'il faisait dès le départ. Dans sa jeunesse, Martin était ce que les américains appellent "Big Man on Campus" (l'homme fort sur le campus) quand il s'agissait de sport. Il fut capitaine de trois équipes à l'Unif. Capitaine de l'équipe de football, capitaine de l'équipe de hockey, et capitaine de l'équipe de cricket. Ce furent tous des sports que Martin maîtrisait bien. A l'âge de 15 ans il reçut l'offre de faire partie de son équipe de cricket du comté (l'équivalent de la all-star team aux USA). Le cricket est un sport où les individus jouent au niveau national et international et constitue (pour les américains qui l'ignorent) un des cinq sports les plus populaires dans le monde. Martin Smith aurait-il pu devenir un professionel bien payé? C'est possible. Mais un problème restait, sa foi ne lui permettait pas de jouer son sport le dimanche, le jour des matchs de cricket. "Je me souviens que je voulais vraiment faire partie de l'équipe" dit-il, "mais râter ma participation à mon église pour un sport n'était pas juste." Aujourd'hui des milliers de fans de Delirious dans le monde entier sont reconnaisants que Dieu ait contrôlé et que l'ait amené jusqu'ici aujourd'hui à offrir ce qu'il a reçu, soit via un CD soit via un concert — de telles preuves de l'oeuvre de Dieu justifie la sagesse pour les chrétiens à chercher Dieu en premier. Le membre suivant du groupe se présent sur l'estrade la tête rasée, la barbichette, et la boucle d'oreille - pour la plupart des joueurs de golf, cela semble déplacé sur le terrain de golf. Stu G est malgré tout très à l'aise sur le circuit de golf. En plus il est sponsorisé par le fabricant de matériel de golf "Callaway". Si vous regardez une vidéo publicitaire de Callaway vous entendrez la bonne musique de delirious qui figure sur la cassette. Stu G raconte avec enthousiasme que voyager avec le groupe lui donne l'occasion de jouer au golf dans le monde entier "Cool, hein?" dit-il en soulevant ses sourcils! Stu a joué en Irlande, En Ecosse, au Pays de Galles, en Australie, en Afrique du Sud, au Canada, en Angleterre et en Irlande du Nord. Les voyages pour le groupe ne sont pas amusants: des heures passées dans les aéroports. Comment savent-ils combiner cela avec l'essentiel, à savoir passer du temps avec Dieu et avec leurs familles respectives. Ils ont trouvé une solution il y a quelques années - passer quelques temps dès qu'ils rentrent d'une tournée; avec leur familles. Passer du temps avec Dieu est une priorité que Delirious tente de maîtriser depuis une dizaine d'années. Ils invitent un pasteur à voyager avec eux pendant les concerts. Stu G souligne l'importance de ne jamais négliger la lecture de la bible et de passer autant de temps que possible avec les membres de leur petits groupes, membres de leur église à travers les études bibliques ou les temps de prière. Il est évident à travers leur musique, qu'ils désirent entretenir une relation vraie avec le Créateur, pas seulement durant les temps d'adoration lors des concerts mais également dans la vie d'adoration de tous les jours. Delirious a déjà voyagé 12 heures et est retourné chez eux en voyageant 12 heures de nouveau après 45 minutes de concert. Leur seul désir est de servir Dieu, ce qui prend pas mal d'effort sportif!
